Once measured, you’ll figure out whether you are one of the seven face shapes: square, oval, rectangle/oblong, round, diamond, heart, or triangle.

There are a few ways to measure your face shape, but the most accurate involves a photo, printer, pen, and ruler.  If you are more tech savvy than I am, you can probably figure out how to make the measurements directly on your computer using a screen ruler.

Here’s How to Measure Your Face Shape

Step 1:  Grab your smart phone and take a photo of your face.  It needs to be straight on, direct, and not cutting off any portion of your head or face.

Step 2: Print the photo off, ensuring your face covers a fairly large portion of the paper.

Step 3: Make a dot at the bottom of your chin and another at the center of your hairline at the top of your forehead.

Step 4: Make a dot where your jaw is widest (roughly an inch below the ear lobe) and a second on the other side.

Step 5: Make a dot where your cheekbones are widest and a second on the other side.

Step 6: Make a dot at your hairline on the sides of your forehead.  This will be about halfway between your eyebrows and the top of your hairline.

Note: If you have a receding hairline, estimate where it should be when placing dots.

Check out the following photo below for dot placement:

Next, grab a ruler.  You’ll need to make four measurements across the face and connect the dots: face length, jawline, forehead, cheekbones. Write each measurement down.

  • Choose sunglasses that contrast your face shape, not mimic it.
  • Choose frames that correspond with your face size.  In other words, big faces can sport bigger, bolder frames.  Smaller faces should stick with smaller, skinnier frames.

Just like face shapes, there can be hybrids of sunglasses.  For example, your face shape may pass for oblong or oval, and clubmasters, may be rounded or squared.

At the end of the day, remember that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to style. It’s your face, your money, your sunglasses.  Choose what makes you happy.
