Easy, Natural DIY Face Moisturizer Recipe for Dry Skin: A Men’s Guide

Sometimes, a store-bought moisturizer just doesn’t cut it in the driest winter months.  Sometimes, like brewing your own beer, you just want to make your own stuff.  This men’s guide on an Easy, Natural DIY face moisturizer recipe for dry skin will combat Old Man Winter and give you the satisfaction of making something with your hands.

A couple of years ago while getting my furnace’s yearly check-up, the HVAC guy talked about the necessity of a furnace humidifier.  At the time, I told him that I wasn’t worried about the humidity conditions in our house.  He said, “just you wait, the older you get the drier your skin gets, and the more you’re going to need a humidifier”.

Thinking it was a scam to bleed more money from my checking account, I politely told him, “no thanks”.

I hadn’t thought much about a humidifier since, but now that I am pushing 30, I have noticed that my skin is a lot drier this winter than usual.  I am outside a lot during the winter for my day job, but I also noticed that my “go-to” moisturizer, Neutrogena Hydro Boost, now contains a fragrance that it didn’t have previously.

I don’t know if it’s my older age, occupation, or change in moisturizer formula, but I’ve realized that my dry face needs some extra moisture reinforcement in the winter.

So, after hours of research and combing through 30+ recipes, I decided to embark on making my own men’s natural DIY face moisturizer recipe for dry skin.

Comedogenic Rating

Before making any DIY face moisturizers, it is extremely important to know comedogenic ratings for each possible ingredient.

Comedogenicy is the susceptibility for ingredients to clog pores, which can lead to acne and blackheads.  Since no one, ever, has enjoyed having acne, it is important to use ingredients with lower comedogenic ratings.

The Comedogenic Rating Scale runs from 0 – 5, where 0 is not likely to clog pores and 5 has a high chance of clogging pores.

Check out the following Comedogenic Rating Scale

  • 0-Not Likely to Clog Pores
  • 1-Low Chance of Clogging Pores
  • 2-Moderately Low Chance of Clogging Pores
  • 3-Moderate Chance of Clogging Pores
  • 4-Fairly High Chance of Clogging Pores
  • 5-High Chance of Clogging Pores

So, in order to prevent clogged pores, acne and blackheads, a good rule of thumb is to keep moisturizer ingredients between 0 and 2.

I have attached a list of some popular ingredients with comedogenic ratings you might come across when thinking about making a natural DIY Face Moisturizer Recipe for Dry Skin.  The list is not exhaustive in every available ingredient.  For a full comedogenic list, check out this site or this site.

I’ve heard coconut oil is great, can I use that in my DIY face moisturizer?

No.

Coconut oil is great for other areas of your body, like your hair, lips, hands, armpits, or anywhere that is not your face.

It’s naturally anti-fungal, antibacterial, and a master at moisturizing. But, as you can see above, it’s comedogenic rating of 4 means that there is a fairly high chance that it will clog your pores.

So, keep that shit off your face and avoid face moisturizer recipes that tell you to use coconut oil.  I researched A LOT of recipes to make my own moisturizer and to write this article.  You’d be amazed at how many include coconut oil as a main ingredient.  I urge you to avoid these sources unless you plan on using the moisturizer solely on your body and not your face.

The Recipe

  • Prep Time: 2 Minutes
  • Cook Time: 5 Minutes
  • Total Time: 7 Minutes
  • Yield: 6 Ounces

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large, heat-resistant bowl. The bowl should be big enough to sit on top of a sauce pan.  We are going for a double boiler effect here.
  2. Add a couple cups of water to a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, put the bowl with ingredients on top of the saucepan.  The steam and heat from the water will begin to gently melt the ingredients without burning them.  Stir frequently.
  3. Once melted and combined, remove the bowl from the saucepan and pour the mixture into a glass jar. (You really only need one, so I’d probably try Hobby Lobby instead of getting the 12-pack from Amazon to save money).
  4. Let the mixture cool in the glass jar.
  5. Once cooled, place the mixture into the refrigerator until solidified.
  6. Remove from the refrigerator and store in your medicine cabinet or dopp kit.

4 Important Notes:

  1. Each ingredient is around the $10 mark on Amazon, so you will make an initial moisturizer investment that is probably much higher than what you are used to. However, these ingredients will yield numerous batches, and each batch should last for 6 months with daily use.  So in the long run, you will be saving money, especially if you tend to buy more expensive, pre-made moisturizers.
  2. This goes without saying, but make sure to apply moisturizer only after you have cleansed. You don’t want to trap dirt and dead skin cells under the moisturizer.  Check out The Complete Men’s Skincare Guide for more important tips on how often to cleanse and exfoliate.
  3. This recipe should not be overly oily on your face. Give it a few minutes after applying, and it should absorb into the skin well.  However, if you find that your face is too oily during the day, only apply your DIY face moisturizer at night.  Then, apply your regular moisturizer with SPF during the day.  Check out CC Cream Tinted Face Moisturizer for Men if you’ve got a complexion that needs a little correcting.  Need spot targeting? Try a concealer for guys and learn about them here.
  4. Be careful with essential oils!  These are potent, and too much of a good thing can definitely be a bad thing, especially when it comes to highly concentrated oils, which can irritate skin.  A few drops of any one essential oil will be enough for this recipe.
